Greetings leaders and rhyme readers
I’m gonna try something new
Impart some knowledge on to you

Here comes some Leader Wisdom in Free Verse
Leaders need to practice, and I encourage you to rehearse
Empathy…the ability to understand and share the feelings of another
Because we are all sister and brother

Emo-tion-ally
Em-pa-thy
Provides the connect-i-vi-ty
Between the leader and me
Shows the leader understands and shares what followers feel
Acknowledges followers’ experiences as real

Leading with empathy is always important, but especially
When others are going through crisis, sadness or some atrocity
Empathetic leaders offer themselves authentically
Expressing true sentiment, avoiding hyperbole and hypocrisy

Everlast said, “God forbid you’d have to walk a mile in their shoes…
Then you’d really know what it’s like to have to lose”
As a leader, you don’t get to choose
When followers face challenges in life
You must be there to feel their strife

Be compassionate, feel followers’ pain
Assure everyone the sun comes out after the rain
Leaders journey along side while leading a support campaign

Inte-llect-u-ally
Em-pa-thy,
Is thinking NOT so easy to do
Leaders putting themselves in the place of you

Exemplary leaders think as…and take another’s perspective
Recognize when they got it wrong, and are self-corrective
Empathy allows leaders to genuinely understand followers’, listen to ideas with clarity
Removing personal bias is a leadership rarity

Make no mistake
To lead, you must partake
In the misery and suffering of those who have a stake
In the outcomes and benefits
Of those whom on the leader throne sits

Now, leaders need to get work done
And always being empathetic is necessary work, but un-fun
Think and feel outside of one’s self, about more than number one

The takeaway
Of the day
Is that if a leader wants me to follow
Then often times that leader needs to swallow
Their pride
And hide
Their vanity
To feel what’s inside of me
